CIRS is a complex illness that derives from a chronic innate immune response, frequently resulting from exposure to biotoxins (toxins made by living organisms). Most of these toxins are made by microbes and can come from a variety of sources, including bacteria from vector borne illness, such as chronic illness from Lyme disease, or fish contaminated with the toxins of marine dinoflagellates, such as ciguatoxins. However, the vast majority of people are sickened from exposure to biotoxins coming from the molds and bacteria inhabiting the interior environment of water-damaged buildings (WDB).
